| The genesis of Gandhi's rise to the 'Mahatmaship' lies in Service. Gandhi dedicated his whole life to serving the lowliest men and women – the illiterate indentured laborers in South Africa, the untouchables in India, the poor laborers in the cities and the poor farmers in the villages spread throughout India. And Gandhi was a relentless crusader of women's equality and rights. |

Gandhi volunteered for 2 hours a day in a small hospital. A little later he volunteered to nurse the victims of a Plague epidemic in a nearby town. Gandhi volunteered to serve in the Boer War, raised a 24-men stretcher carrier corps and served the sick and wounded soldiers of that war. For more than 40 years Gandhi served as the editor and publisher of several newspapers, and poured a good deal of his own money into it, because journalism to him was 'a social service'. His door always remained open to anyone who needed any kind of help from him. No task was too menial for him. Gandhi was a living proof of the teaching, "He who will serve the most will become the master of all." His sincere and relentless service earned Gandhi the title, 'the Father of the Nation'. |
